During the 1940's , Mexican American youth refused to compromise their cultural norms. Their defiance led to conflicts called the Zoot Suit RIots in Los Angeles, California. Where Latino youth and other minorities were targeted by white servicemen. Because the media portrayed Mexican American Youth as a threat to law and order, the attacks were legitimized as a means of cleaning the streets of juvenile delinquency . The unjust and unpunished attacks inspired civil rights activism among the Chicano community that grow into a movement in the 1960s.
